Previous Work
Prior to recent work by Balmoral, exploration on the Grasset Property had been very limited. A review of existing mineral deposit and exploration work databases yielded only 29 known drill holes on the 17,000+ hectare Grasset Property and 3 precious metal occurrences (2 silver and 1 gold).
The earliest reported mineral discovery is a quartz-vein hosted gold showing located on the south-western shore of Lac Grasset. Grab samples from mafic volcanic hosted quartz veins in this area returned a high of 5.55 g/t gold. Four holes were drilled in the vicinity of this discovery in 1957 but no anomalous gold values were reported.
Addition work during the late 1950's and late 1970's focussed on drill testing of magnetic or conductive features in the search for copper-zinc deposits similar to those discovered in the Mattagami region. Several sulphide horizons with minor associated base metals were intersected. All of these occurrences are located in the volcanic sequence north of the Sunday Lake Deformation Zone.
In the late 1990's as part of regional base metal exploration program Fairstar Exploration tested two conductors on the northeastern portion of the property. One of these two holes intersected a narrow quartz vein which returned strongly elevated silver values (209 g/t silver over 0.30 metres).
